The Project
Welcome to the Burrard Inlet Project! Over the next few months, this site will be frequently updated with videos, photos, stories, blog posts, and resources to assist educators, students, residents, and visitors who are looking for meaningful information about the Burrard Inlet.
People feel differently about things they have connections with. So many students and educators know very little about the Burrard Inlet other than traffic conditions on the bridges. I want people to have a connection with the people, the sea, and the land of the inlet so that they can care about it and become stewards. |
The ultimate goals of the project are:
Ideally my time will be spent time learning local languages with elders, meeting with industry leaders from organizations like the Port of Vancouver or Seaspan, getting tours of infrastructure projects like the Lions Gate Bridge or the Cleveland Dam, visiting museums, parks, and archives, and spending time on the water getting to know the rhythms of the inlet.
Finally, the reason I can do this is that Collingwood School has generously provided me with sabbatical time for this project. What that means is that, for the spring term of the 2016-17 academic year, I have been released from my day-to-day teaching responsibilities to work on this project. Please see my sabbatical proposal below for more information on what the Burrard Inlet Project is all about.
- To help local students learn about the First Nations, local history, and the human and natural geography of the Burrard Inlet
- To compile resources and develop activities that will help students make meaningful, authentic connections with the Burrard Inlet
